Jagger Benjamin got his report card last week. There were a few areas here and there that he had wavered in at the beginning of the year. He has showed marked improvement and was on par with the rest of his class regarding those issues, but there is still an area that he seems to be struggling with. Eric and I decided it was time to share with his teacher his history and diagnosis. We had kept it to ourselves because we didn't want him to face any prejudice or be misunderstood or not pushed to his full potential. Jagger's story is his story to tell and his story to continue to write. We hesitate to do him an injustice by sharing anything that could cause someone to look at him like he is less than. We made the decision to share what was important when we felt it was time.
He was evaluated last year (per our "every two year new evaluation rule" to make sure he is where he should be developmentally) and the doctor told us that Jagger was going to struggle with a specific issue in school. We took that with a grain of salt and would deal with it if it came up.
He was right though and today I met with his teacher to explain the situation. I gave her a very brief summary of his past and the diagnosis he has received. She was writing things down as I spoke. She then put her pen down, looked at me, and said, "That explains A LOT of things." Ha!
Oh, and apparently he is some kind of math whiz. Who knew?
Listening to his tunes...."I don't want to lose your love TO-NIIIGHT!" He sang that song in the Dallas airport. Unfortunately, he had no idea that when one wears headphones to sing, one tends to sing very loudly. It seems even louder when everyone is silently waiting to board their flight.
